Cottage food labeling requirements in Michigan

Informational only — not legal advice. Verify every requirement with the official agency cited below before producing or selling food.

Each package of cottage food sold in Michigan must include:

  • Name and physical address of the operation (no P.O. boxes), or — if registered with the MSU Product Center — name, telephone number, and registration number
  • Name of the product
  • Ingredients in descending order of predominance by weight, including sub-ingredients of prepared items
  • Net weight or net volume, with the metric equivalent
  • Allergen labeling as required by federal law
  • Nutrition labeling as required by federal law if a nutritional claim is made
  • "Made in a home kitchen that has not been inspected by the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development" in at least 11-point type, in a color that contrasts with the background
